I was a fan of this book. I recently graduated from a state maritime school, and before entering I'd had no idea how vital the American Merchant Marine had been. This book is not up to date (I believe it was published in 1902-1903, but if you're interested in America's seafaring history, this is a great book. It covers virtually all aspects of the American Merchant Marine until the time it was published.Product details

long winded, dry reading.
Since I am an old 'Salt', I have enjoyed reading about the 'older Salts'. They had it worse than we did. The more things change, the more they stay the same. No matter how much automation you have, you still need the sailors to man the ship.
